This knife came out in 1980 and it was the first knife of the second group of knives to come from Smith & Wesson. The first group were all designed by Blackie Collins and came out in 1974 and were discontinued when the second group came out in 1980. Smith & Wesson brought out a Texas Ranger Bowie Commemorative in 1973 that was designed by John Wilson and R.G. Jinks. The Texas Ranger Bowie was the first knife made by Smith & Wesson.
